The Peninsula Friends of the Library’s “Celebrating our Similarities” on November 16 featured members of six indigenous California tribes.

Heather Askinosie, of Energy Muse, started the afternoon with a prayer taught to her by spiritual healer Bobby Lake-Thom (Karuk & Seneca), with whom she studied. Sheridan Macknight (White Earth Chippewa/Lakota) shared wonderful stories through art that celebrated many facets of tribal life, including a strong heart woman who teaches the spirit lives on.

Amy Stretter (Chickahominy), The Chief of Style, shared indigenous fashion, creating awareness of appropriated clothing. The pottery was presented by Delora Bertsch (Choctaw). Virginia Carmelo (Tongva) sang songs and shared the history and culture of the original Palos Verdes Peninsula inhabitants.

Susie Yellowhorse Jensen (Navajo) closed the celebration with incredibly tasting fry bread topped with powdered sugar and drizzled with honey. The community room was filled with reverence for the Native American Heritage.
