Beach Sports: Cycling, golf, running, surfing, volleyball and more

Running: Registration is available for the Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk & Kids Dash to be held Saturday, March 15. Starting and finishing in front of Village Runner, 1811-A Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach, the 5K begins at 8 a.m. followed by the Leprechaun (kids) Dash at 9:30 a.m. Fees are $35 for the 5K and $25 for the Kids Dash. All participants receive a T-shirt. Age division awards and cash prizes to the top three male and female finishers will be given. Proceeds benefit the St. Lawrence Martyr Education Foundation. Girls on the Run is a curriculum-based program for girls ages 8 to under 14 years to build self-esteem through running and discussions related to friendship, bullying, healthy eating habits and other issues facing young girls. Participants gradually train for a 5K run. Meets Mondays and Thursdays. Offered through the MB Recreation Dept. 310-802-5448.

Cycling: The Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races has started, and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 30 on a course in Carson, near Torrance. Often called the “race of truth,” a time trial is a race against the clock. There are men’s and women’s categories for several different age groups. Racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. The Baxter Series is sponsored by the South Bay Wheelmen, a club for racers, aspiring racers, and those who just love to ride their bike. Participants in the Baxter races must be a club member and have a US Cycling Federation license, but membership and a one-day USCF license can both be obtained at the race. Volleyball: The Hermosa Beach 4-Person Coed Volleyball League begins Tuesday, March 20. Games will be north of the Hermosa Beach pier from 6-8 p.m. Format is best 2-out-of-3 each evening, then two weeks of playoffs after the six-week season. Registration must be made at the Community Center, 710 Pier Ave. in Hermosa Beach prior to league start date. Register early as this league will sell out due to our cap of 44 teams. Individuals must contact us to be placed on a team for registration. 6 weeks of regular season play with 2 weeks of playoffs. Cost is $240 per team plus $5 per non-HB resident. The United States Youth Volleyball League welcomes both boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 15 to play in its Spring 2012 season. The Hermosa Beach season lasts for eight weeks and will start on April 11, ending June 6. The Hermosa Beach league will meet at South Park on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. The USYVL is a volunteer organization and is currently looking for volunteers for the spring 2012 season. We are in need of volunteer coaches, assistant coaches, first-aid administrators (must be currently CPR/first-aid certified), and site directors. Fitness: Registration is underway for classes through the South Bay Adult School. A wide variety of fitness classes are offered: yoga, pilates, weight training, swimming, spin, Zumba and more. AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach invites family members ages 5 and up to improve balance, strength and power on its 35-foot outdoor rock walls, which are open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $8. Also available is a ropes course where groups of seven (ages 8 and up) start each half hour every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost for the ropes course is $20; advance registration is recommended. Golf: Manhattan residents ages 15 and younger and 55 and older may purchase golf discount cards from the Live Oak Tennis office, 1901 Valley Dr. Cost of the card is $1 annually and may be used Jan. 1-Dec. 31 to receive special half price fees 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mon.-Fri. at the Marriott Municipal course located at 1400 Parkview Ave., behind the Marriott Hotel. Golf lessons for adults and children at the Lakes in El Segundo. Kids ages 4-8 can learn the game beginning Saturday, March 10. Fee $110. Adults lessons begin this week. A scramble format tourney is being organized by Our Lady of Guadalupe parish on March 23 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach. The 12:30 p.m. shotgun start will be followed by a sit-down dinner. Fee of $175 per person includes lunch, dinner, gift bag, raffle and, of course, 18 holes of golf. Play as a foursome, partial or individual. Proceeds benefit the school and parish. Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders Club continues its 2011-12 South Bay Surf Series Saturday, Mar. 17 at 26th Street, Manhattan Beach (sponsored by Pier Surf). Contests are open to non members and include divisions from micro groms (9 and under) up to legends (50+). Future contests will be: Saturday, April 21 at El Porto (sponsored by Surf Concepts) and Saturday May 19 at the Manhattan Pier (sponsored by Spyder Surf).
