Open any day now: Hamptons on Manhattan Ave near Mama D’s. Executive Chef David Linville offers east coast style seafood and more. Brag-able beer and wine menu.
Opening this summer Jackson’s Food + Drink on Rosecrans Ave near Arclight Theater. Genre: New American, wine bar, gastropub. Until then, you can spot Chef Ben Wright cooking at Establishment at times.
Inside/outside renovation has begun at Fishbar in Manhattan Beach. A true gem with the perfect combination of great drinks, good food, friendly staff, and cool customers.
Beyond the Bubble: Vibiana in downtown LA hosted recent tasting events to show off its gorgeous renovation. Rhone Rangers—Quite nice for so many Paso Robles vintners to come down to us. Inaugural Los Angeles Cocktail Classic — $75 tickets weed out the riff-raff. Lots of smart, young, attractive guys and girls all dolled up. Hipsters abound. Greg and Jerry of MB Post were on the scene representing South Bay.
Legal, but controversial “Goldfish Races” have begun at America Junkie. Not sure whose brilliant idea this was. Side note: a bar in WA decided to stop this nonsense after a PETA protest in 2011. Boycotters say the practice is unethical, immoral, and inhumane. Many drinkers are also hard-core animal lovers. What’s next — kitten races using hair dryers?
Untapped Resource: Game Changers. Any decent looking man with a clean shirt and good game should be able to score here. Some young pups I mentor report high success when chatting up chicks in a quiet place that allows for clever, witty conversation (effective pick-up lines). One guy stated he was, “Batting a thousand.” If you get rebuffed, it’s a big enough venue to regroup and bounce back. Quality women who aren’t trying too hard. Pretty and sane. Self-proclaimed best happy hour. Come down and see if you agree. Seven days a week from 2:00 -7:00 pm. That’s 35 hours of happy.

My Favorite Thing Week #20: Bourbon Barrel Strong Ale at Abigaile. Notes of honey, vanilla beans, and charred oak. Light and airy like a butterfly that darts about on your tongue. Complimentary beer tasting with Brewmaster Brian Brewer on Monday nights.

Dating Tip 8: Smile at everyone. After a week of following last week’s advice, being a snob was really boring and lonely. Just go ahead and be nice, because there’s nothing uglier than a mean girl. A special note to mean girls: maybe you were fortunate enough to be born beautiful, but it only hurts God’s feelings when you ruin it by acting ugly. Say hi back. Even if you think someone’s uglier and chubbier than you are, guess what?! It’s not contagious. Now you look mean and dumb.
How to Get Guys to Leave You Alone: I don’t really have this problem. It’s more like resisting the urge to contact a hot guy who no longer takes my calls. Pull a hara-kiri and tell him you love him; the rest will take care of itself. Advice for avoiding creepy guys: don’t give out your number when you’re drunk. Your creep-radar is down. If this is a persistent problem, drink less.
Next week: Even more brilliant ideas gone awry.
