The Kentwood Players’ production of Little Shop of Horrors is absolutely delightful. Full of great acting, music and singing, this is one shop that is certainly worth visiting.
The play is set in the early 1960s, and most of the action takes place in Mr. Mushnik (Peter Miller)’s Skid Row Flower Shop. Seymour Krelborn (Brett Chapin) is a nerdy employer at Mushnik’s shop who brings home a strange-looking plant. He decides to name it Audrey II, after his love interest Audrey (Kristen Towers-Rowles), who is in an abusive relationship with a sadistic dentist-boyfriend named Orin Scrivello (Randy Brown). Audrey II generates customers and publicity for Mushnik’s Skid Row Flower Shop, but things get complicated when Audrey II grows into a giant, talking man-eating plant. Soon, Krelborn is tempted by Audrey II, who promises to fulfill his desires, including fame and being with Audrey herself, if Krelborn gives in to the plant’s demands.
The opening night of Friday the 13th did nothing to sabotage the production. Truly entertaining, filled with great direction and choreography by Michael-Anthony Nozzi, as well as great acting and singing from the leads (even the minor characters make an impression), the Kentwood Players’ production of Little Shop of Horrors is fun, fun, fun. Did I mention fun?
