Tom Desmond, 18-year firefighter and paramedic for the Manhattan Beach Fire Department and South Bay native, was promoted to fire captain on Friday.
Over the years, he’s served as a fire inspector, acting engineer and acting captain. Desmond is now one of the department’s seven captains.
“I have been fortunate to have been mentored by some great leaders within our department, and I am excited to help mentor, train and coach future leaders of our department,” Desmond said, at his badge pinning ceremony. His son, Thomas, pinned his badge.
Desmond serves on the Manhattan Beach Community Emergency Response Team Association and is the president of the Fire Association Board. He received his associate’s degree in fire science from El Camino College, and his bachelor’s degree in fire protection administration from California State University, Los Angeles. Desmond lives in Redondo Beach with his wife, Lori and their two kids, Emma and Thomas.
