About Town: Blue Whales, an oversized vehicle ordinance, and a new farmer’s market

A congregation of Blue Whales – the largest mammals on Earth, more than 80 ft. long and 100 tons each – are congregating in the underwater Redondo Canyon. More than 20 have been spotted at a time, and the Voyager has launched special daily whale watching rides from noon to 3 p.m. every weekday and 9 a.m. to noon on weekends. All trips are accompanied by a narration by American Cetacean Society whale watch naturalists. $25 for adults and $15 for children. See www.voyagerexcursions.com for more information. Oversized vehicle ordinance

The Redondo Beach City Council on Tuesday night tentatively approved a new city ordinance restricting overnight parking of oversized vehicles on city streets. Parking vehicles that are longer than 22 ft. and a combination of over 7 ft. wide or 8 ft. tall shall be prohibited from parking between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., except on weekend and Monday mornings when the vehicle is parked within 400 ft. of the home of the resident it is registered to. Residents may also obtain up to 6 permits per month or 60 per year that will allow overnight parking for themselves or visitors. The ordinance, which will be brought back for final approval at the Oct. 7 City Council meeting, would not go into effect until next year. For more information see www.redondo.org.

Riviera Village Farmer’s Market

The City Council also approved the proposed Riviera Village Farmer’s Market. The new market, organized by the Riviera Village Business Improvement District, will take place 3 to 8 p.m. on Fridays on Avenue I between Catalina and Camino de la Costa.
