About Town in Hermosa Beach

South Park re-opening

After years of construction and improvements, South Park will reopen to the public this Saturday.

The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. at 425 Valley Drive. The park, which formerly housed a roller-hockey rink, blends natural features with recreational equipment to create a “universally accessible” playground for people of varying ages, including those with disabilities.

The park is also expected to feature a community garden. Although that aspect of the facility is still under construction, there will be gardening activities and demonstrations, as well information about how to obtain a plot in the garden.

Joint Commission study session

Multiple city agencies will gather at City Council Chambers Monday night to discuss long-term planning issues for Hermosa Beach.

The 7 p.m. meeting will bring together the Planning, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Emergency Preparedness Advisory commissions in a discussion of the draft of PLAN Hermosa, which encompasses the city’s integrated General Plan and proposed Local Coastal Program. Together, the two documents will shape city development decisions and priorities over the next decade. The meeting will be one of several over the year devoted to the long-range planning process.

The coastal program would eventually require approval by the state Coastal Commission.

Recycling event

Old batteries, televisions, computers and more can be safely disposed of this weekend with a complimentary hazardous and e-waste recycling event at Clark Field.

The event will last from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Public Works Department and the local Sanitation District, and is open to all Los Angeles County residents.

Business waste, tires, controlled substances, and large appliances will not be accepted.
