Movies on the beach
The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Parks and the South Bay Art and Film Festival kick off a monthly cinema series this weekend with a Saturday night screening of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Moviegoers can catch Indiana Jones, free, from the sand on the south side of the Hermosa Pier, starting at 7:30 p.m. The archaeological adventure is the first of four movies that will be shown, one each Saturday, througAugust. Refreshments and clothing will be sold. Profits and donations will support city parks.
Lifeguard Championships
Approximately 1,000 lifeguards will run, swim, paddle and row in pursuit of glory at the U.S. Lifeguard Association National Championships next week. The event runs Aug. 10-13, and will take place in a variety of locations along Hermosa’s beaches. Current and former lifeguards, as well as junior lifeguards, will participate in surf rescue sports intended to demonstrate the level of fitness required to watch over beachgoers. Guards from all over the country will descend on Hermosa, but local Los Angeles County lifesavers are perennial favorites in the annual event.
