About town in Hermosa Beach

Beach handball

Hermosa Beach will host an international team handball friendly Β on Saturday afternoon.

U.S. handballers will square off against the Brazilians, current world champs, on the sand north of the Pier at 10 a.m.

Beach handball is a fast-paced sport in which two teams of four players try to shoot a ball across the sand into the opposite team’s goal. It is experiencing rapid growth in countries around the world.

The match comes as the U.S. team prepares for the intense competition at the Pan-American beach handball championships later this month in Vargas, Venezuela. The Brazilian team will be spending the week in Hermosa, practicing in preparation for the friendly.

Easter Egg hunt

Hope Chapel will host an Easter Egg hunt this Saturday in North Hermosa.

The event, for children 12 and under, is free to the public and begins at 10 a.m. at Valley Park. Games, a bounce house, face painting and family photos will also be available.

Special meeting

The Planning Commission will have a special meeting next Monday evening.

The meeting, held at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers, will be a study session on PLAN Hermosa, the city’s efforts to update its general plan and local coastal program. Each of the city’s other three commissionsβ€”Parks and Recreation, Emergency Preparedness, and Public Worksβ€”will also hold meetings on the plan.

City officials hope to have the documents finalized by August in order to be eligible for certain grants.
