Important Halloween safety tips from the Manhattan Beach Police Department
For Trick-or-Treaters
- Do not enter homes without adult supervision, and only approach homes with porch lights on.
- Walk on sidewalks, not in the street. Do not assume the right of way.
- Carry a flashlight.
- Plan and discuss the route trick-or-treaters intend to follow. Encourage children to travel only in familiar areas and along the planned route. Establish a return time.
- Wear shoes that fit well and costumes short enough to prevent tripping. Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injuries on Halloween.
- Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes or treat bags for better nighttime visibility.
- If masks are work, consider removing it when crossing streets for greater visibility.
For Homes
- Consider fire safety when decorating. Keep Jack O’ lanterns away from drapes, decorations and flammable material.
- Turn your porch light on for trick-or-treaters.
- Eliminate tripping hazards on your porch and walkway.
- Make sure pets are well-secured.
For Drivers
- Drive slowly through the community; remain cautious of children walking or running on the street.
- Don’t drink and drive.
Free flu vaccination
The Los Angeles County Department of Health is sponsoring a free flu vaccination clinic next Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District’s board room, located at 325 South Peck Ave. in Manhattan Beach. The event is open to all members of the public.
Mira Costa fall play
The Mira Costa High School Drama Department’s classic play “The Crucible” opens Friday night at 7:30 p.m in the Costa auditorium. Subsequent showings include Saturday at 7:30 p.m., next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., next Thursday at 6:30 p.m., next Friday at 7:30 p.m. and next Saturday at 2 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m.
Pre-sale tickets, $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, are available at Dietz Brothers, Patterson Cleaners and Tiffany Cleaners through Friday. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Tickets are also available online via PayPal (with $1 additional PayPal fee) at miracostadramaboosters.org. Blood drive
The annual UCLA-sponsored blood drive will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Manhattan Beach Middle School multi-purpose room. Donors must bring a photo ID. Election Day
Four candidates face off Tuesday for a seat on the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees. Election night results will be available after 8 p.m. at www.lavote.net. Visit the website to check your voter registration status or to find out more about special assistance.
