Two city employees to retire

The City Council announced last Tuesday that two senior managers will soon be retiring. Steve Huang, director of Engineering and Building Services, and Fire Chief Dan Madrigal will retire from their jobs in December.

Huang began working for the city in 1995 as a civil engineer and stayed at Redondo Beach for 16 years. According to a release from the city, Huang has been responsible for many signature Capital Improvement Projects including the improvement of the city-wide wastewater system, the renovation of the Performing Arts Center, Alta Vista Community Center and the North branch of the public library. He has also contributed to streetscape improvements and has been instrumental in building Redondo Beach’s sister city relationship in China as the official interpreter.

Madrigal previously worked at Stanton and Huntington Beach Fire Departments and started working for Redondo Beach in 2002 as Fire Division Chief. He was promoted to fire chief in 2005. According to a release from the city, under his watch, Redondo Beach obtained a Class II fire suppression rating, putting the city in the top one percent of all fire departments in the United States. Madrigal has also been responsible for the department’s various deployments to wildfires throughout the state.

“Both of these City Department Heads have served with distinction, dedicating their professional careers to improving the quality of life for Redondo Beach residents and businesses,” City Manager Bill Workman said in the release. “They have been genuine leaders during a time of achievement and challenge for local government. I will miss them personally and professionally as I counted on them everyday to do the right things for our community.”
