Dan Burden, the country’s leading, if not only, expert on walking and biking in urban settings will share his expertise tonight in Manhattan Beach, Wed., Jan. 19; and tomorrow night in Redondo Beach, Jan. 20.

Burden is a leader of the Vitality City program, which, over the next three years, hopes to improve the physical and mental well being of beach city residents.

During a meeting with Hermosa Beach residents at Clark Stadium on Tuesday night, Burden said that reducing traffic lanes, and speed limits, and replacing traffic signals with traffic circles can reduce commuter time, while also making streets safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Residents identified the transitions from the Hermosa Strand to the Manhattan Strand and from the Hermosa Strand to Harbor drive as two problem areas for bicyclists. Residents also suggested sharrows on Aviation to make drivers more aware of the fact that bicyclists have a right to traffic lanes. Burden said that Long Beach has painted sharrow lanes green to emphasize the rights of bicyclists.

Burden will conduct a “walking audit” in Manhattan Beach tonight, Wed., Jan. 19, from 6 to 7 p.m., starting at the Joslyn Center, 1601 Valley Drive. The walking audit will be followed by a bikability/walkability workshop, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Burdan will lead similar exercises tomorrow night, Thurs., Jan. 20, for Redondo Beach residents at the Alta Vista Community Center, 715 Julia Ave. ER
