With only one game remaining in the regular season, Redondo’s baseball team remained in contention for a long awaited post season appearance, handing Peninsula only its second league loss with a 1-0 road win Tuesday.

With a strong defense behind him, Grant Wessel tossed a complete-game two-hitter and Drew Kozain doubled home Travis Fischvogt in the sixth inning for the Sea Hawk victory.

The win kept Redondo (15-14, 5-4) in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Sea Hawks will host Peninsula (18-9-1, 7-2) Thursday. The Panthers virtually dropped out of the league race as West (17-10-1, 8-1) finishes league play at Leuzinger, a team they beat 16-0 Tuesday.

Redondo overcame five errors to edge Mira Costa 6-5 last Friday earning a split in the rivalry series. Kozain tossed a six-hitter allowing only one earned run while striking out eight. At the plate, Kozain hit doubles and drove in two runs for the Sea Hawks.

While the loss to Redondo was a set back, Mira Costa (17-13, 4-5) kept its playoff hopes alive with a 2-1 win over visiting Palos Verdes (18-11, 3-6). Sean Isaac struck out eight and allowed only one unearned run in 6 2/3 innings for the Mustangs who scored both of their runs in the second inning, one on a squeeze play.

The Mustangs travel to Palos Verdes Thursday for a crucial Bay League finale.

Katie Saunders and Stefanni Lajuenesse each went 2-for 4 while Breanna Kelly hurled a complete game for Mira Costa (20-6-1, 7-2) who remains in a first-place tie with Peninsula.

Redondo (13-11, 5-4) had a two-run home run by Jessie Cotton. The Sea Hawks received a little help from West, who upset Palos Verdes 9-1 on the road Tuesday. The loss kept Redondo in a tie with Palos Verdes (14-14-, 5-4) for the final automatic playoff berth.

Mira Costa and Redondo entered Tuesday’s game after much needed victories last Friday. Mira Costa defeated West 8-1. Sabrina Stewart went 2-for-3 with a double, Chloe Krasnoff belted a home run and Katie Saunders enjoyed a three-hit performance.

Redondo got its chance to play lowly Leuzinger, defeating the Olympians 25-0 behind Katrina Cohen’s 4-for-4 game that included three doubles and five RBIs.

Bay League action concludes Thursday with crucial games for Mira Costa and Redondo. The Mustangs travel to Palos Verdes while Redondo hosts league-leading Peninsula. Both games start at 3:15 p.m. ER
