Leo Pustilnikov vowed to paint over the 586-foot long Wyland Whale mural on the AES power plant’s west facing wall last month. Pustilnikov and partners purchased the power plant in March.
“I offered to work with the Wyland Foundation and they tried extorting me. I don’t take kindly to that, ” Pustilnikov told Easy Reader. The Wyland Foundation responded to his overtures with a request for a donation, Pustilnilov said.
Pustilnilov has not made good on his threat. Instead, he unveiled 10 new murals at the power plant this week, with the promise of 30, and maybe 300 more to come. The murals’ brash, urban style suggests a menacing challenge to Wyland’s playful whale — Kevin Cody
