Beginning its second decade, the Redondo Beach Triathlon continues to provide competition for athletes of all skill levels and age groups.

Run by race directors Rick and Connie Crump, the 11th annual Redondo Beach Triathlon takes place Sunday, June 14, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Veteran’s Park.

“Triathlon is always growing and we’re a springboard for athletes competing in the sport,” said Rick Crump, an accomplished triathlete in his own right. “I’m always looking for new names to win the race.”

For many years, Redondo Beach triathletes in their 30s such as Chris Foster, Jason May, Mark Tripp and Jimmy Wills were among the top contenders but the tide seems to be turning with a new generation of triathletes moving into the top spots.

Irvine’s Evan Kraus, 28, won last year’s race with a time of  43 minutes, 39 seconds. Duncan Reid, 16, of Palos Verdes Estates, finished second and Manhattan Beach’s Ryan Reede placed fourth. Reede won the event in 2012 at the age of 18.

The defending women’s champion is Mara Muslea, 16 of El Segundo, who finished with a time of 51:35. In 2013, former Mira Costa standout swimmer Taylor Spivey captured the women’s crown at the age of 22.

The USAT-sanctioned sprint triathlon consists of a half-mile swim, 6-mile bike and 2-mile run. A non-competitive, half distance race for friends, families and kids 10 and older follows the sprint triathlon.

Commemorative awards are given to the top three in each age division and top two relays in each division. Fees are $75 (13-19 and 65 and older), $85 (20-64), $115 (sprint relays), $65 (mini sprint) and $95 (mini sprint relay). Add $5 after June 1.

Proceeds benefit Cheer for Children, a non-profit organization that gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center.
