Mustangs edge Sea Hawks to remain unbeaten in girls beach volleyball

Mira Costa’s girls beach volleyball team knocked off rival Redondo 2-1 Saturday to remain one win ahead of Long Beach Wilson in the Bay Division of the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League.

The second-ranked Mustangs (8-0) kept pace with top-ranked Valencia (8-0) as they enter the final week of the regular season.

Mira Costa’s No. 1 team of Lan Nguyen and Keala Rusher defeated Redondo’s top duo of Dominique Dodd and Hayes Hones 21-13, 21-9 and the Mustang’s second team of Emma Smith/Samantha Snyder knocked off the Sea Hawk’s tandem of Katie Barkley/Pearl Mazza 21-15, 18-21, 15-11.

Redondo’s No. 3 team of Lauren Cordero/Brittany Ungermann prevented the sweep with a 21-19, 21-19 win over Lindsay Chalmers/Kelly Geiser.

Later in the day, Mira Costa swept Palos Verdes 3-0 and seventh-ranked Redondo lost to No. 6 Long Beach Wilson 2-1.

Mira Costa concludes regular season action with matches against Long Beach Wilson and Harvard-Westlake while Redondo takes on West Torrance Varsity and Palos Verdes.

Playoffs begin Thursday, May 9 with the wildcard round, followed first-round matches on Friday, May 10 and quarterfinal, semifinal and final matches on Saturday, May 11.
