About Town Redondo – Measure ART approved, Veterans Day ceremony, SOCAL ROC
By Garth Meyer
Measure ART passes with wide margin
Measure ART will pass by a wide margin, 64% to 36%, as of Wednesday, according to Los Angeles County Elections returns.
The initiative, put on the ballot by the Redondo Beach city council, aims to spur change in the Artesia and Aviation Blvd. corridor, among other items. Measure ART increases the corridor’s Floor Area Ratio to 1.5, meaning a property owner may build with a square footage of one and a half times the lot size, including underground parking.
The current Floor Area Ratio is .6.
Other parts of Measure ART change some lots in the city from mixed-use and residential to commercial zoning, and reduce some residential density. Other areas are changed to allow increased residential density.
The measure also creates industrial flex overlay zones, allowing commercial and light industrial uses such as technology, incubator spaces, research and development, hotels and offices. All of these will now have a maximum Floor Area Ratio of 1.0.
Nov. 11 Veterans Day ceremony
The annual Redondo Beach Veterans Day ceremony is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at Veterans Park.
Keynote speaker is Jonathan Williams, president and CEO of the Pacific Battleship Center in San Pedro, centered around the battleship “Iowa.”
Local officials, military dignitaries and community leaders will also participate in the ceremony. The flag flown over the Redondo Beach Veterans Memorial will be retired by the Coastal Sea Cadets. They raised the same flag on Memorial Day.
The retired flag will be formally presented to a local veteran.
After the ceremony, the Redondo Beach Elks Lodge will hold a free barbecue in their parking lot for all veterans, members of the military and first responders. The cost is $5 for all others.
