Like any sports bar, football games pack the booths and seats of Patrick Molloy’s. Each of the bar’s 30 TV sets is tuned to a game and the place gets raucous.
But the craziest night in recent memory for Vi Nguyen, manager and 13 year veteran of Molloy’s, took place last month, for UFC 196 — the night that brash Irish fighter Conor McGregor suffered a submission loss to Nate Diaz.
“We were packed. People were calling in all week to reserve spots,” Nguyen said. The bar was jammed to the rafters. Fight fans were lined up out the door, and many had to be turned away. “We could barely squeeze through the walkways,” she said.
The passion isn’t limited to fight nights though. The recent NCAA tournament, and the bar’s bracket contest, gave fans the chance to play against each other and possibly win a TV in the process.
“We like to give people more of a reason to be here than just great food and beer,” she said.
