Dr. Nancy Kelly, who recently won statewide recognition for being the Human Resources Administrator of the Year, has been appointed to the job of superintendent of Upland Unified School District and will leave Redondo Beach Unified School District in June.
She will replace Gary Rutherford, who left Upland in January to become Desert Sands Unified School District’s superintendent. Until July 1, when Kelly starts her new job, Upland’s assistant superintendent of human resources will be filling in.
Kelly has been with the Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) for the last seven years of her career in education, which spans three decades. She worked as an instructional aide, counselor, high school assistant principal, high school principal, and director prior to joining RBUSD in 2006.
“Nancy is a great leader and friend,” RBUSD Superintendent Dr. Steven Keller said. “Candidly, we had many private disagreements about leadership, management, decisions, hiring, what’s best for kids, and even attire. Some of those debates I lost and RBUSD is better for it. I’m proud of her and I’ll miss her, debates and all. Upland USD is lucky to have her.”
