In memoriam: Boots

“Boots” Thelen, owner of the Mermaid restaurant, was a feisty old fart, but you had to love him. Unfortunately, his name is now on the little blackboard just above the back bar. You don’t want to be on that blackboard. It means you are dead.

One day after “Boots” was gone, I was thinking about him and neglecting my drink when I realized there was one little ice cube left floating in my glass. So I wrote this little poem in memory of Boots.

Ode to an ice cube

Little island of ice

Floating in my drink

I sit here and watch

You slowly shrink

But before you go

My precious jewel

Thanks for keep’n

My drink cool.
