Sailing: Brian McMartin, 22, along with fellow King Harbor Yacht Club (KHYC) members Mick Shlens and Jim Murrell, were part of the crew of the Groovederci team that won the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship held Sept. 24-27 in Long Beach. The event is considered sailing’s version of the Super Bowl, World Series or World Cup.
McMartin, who began racing at the age of seven in the KHYC summer sailing program, officially became a member of the KHYC last year, making him the club’s first third-generation sailor. His grandfather joined the KHYC in 1963.
McMartin hopes this victory opens doors into more Grand Prix sailing around the globe. Until then, he’ll be returning to the University of California Irvine where he majors in Psychology and Business and racing in as many local events as he can.
