The tall ship Lady Washington, a replica of one of the first U.S.-flagged ships to explore the west coast of North America, will once again be in Redondo Beach for two weeks starting Nov. 23. The 112-feet-long ship will offer education programs for K-12 students, public sailings and walk-on tours during the time it is in port.
The Lady Washington was featured as Captain Hook’s ship, the Jolly Roger, in the television show “Once Upon a Time” in an episode titled “The Crocodile.” The ship has also played roles in several motion pictures including HMS Interceptor in the 2003 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It was also featured as the HMS Enterprise in the 1994 Star Trek: Generations.
“The ship’s main purpose is to teach,” said Joe Follansbee, communications director for Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, the not-for-profit public development authority that operates the Lady Washington. That’s a big part of what the ship will do while she’s in King Harbor, where she was moored last year with a similar mission. The professional and volunteer crew will host tours and cruises for individuals and school groups. They’ll teach anyone who cares to learn, the arts of navigation and seamanship with a dash of oceanography and sea lore tossed in for an authentic taste of nautical history. Self-guided tours are opportunities to visit the ship and speak to her crew, who will be in 18th century costume. During the 3-hour adventure sale, guests are invited to help raise a sail, sing a sea shanty and take the helm of the ship.

The ship is expected to sail into the Redondo Beach harbor on Wednesday night. Walk-on tours will begin at noon on Friday. Adventure sails are scheduled for the next two weekends at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Walk-on tours are free, but a $3 donation is requested. Adventure sails are $39 and open to all ages.
Educators are invited to schedule one-hour and three-hour living history programs aboard the ship. For more information, call the Historical Seaport at 800-200-5239 or visit www.historicalseaport.org.
