In the wake of the recession, per pupil funding in California has, by some estimates, dropped to 49th in the United States. Local school districts have slashed millions from their budgets, resulting in larger class sizes, program reductions, and employee layoffs. The Manhattan Beach Unified School District has endured a 22 percent funding decrease, requiring several rounds of cuts that cumulatively added up to an $11 million reduction in its annual budget.
