For the third year in a row, Vistamar School has a student–athlete sign a Letter of Intent to join a Division I athletic program. Senior Colin McCall has decided to join Stanford University’s Men’s Volleyball program where he will be joining Vistamar alumnus, Alex Stephanus (2011) on the team.

A two-time All-CIF selection, McCall has a 3.8 GPA and was also recruited by Pepperdine, UCSD, Princeton and NYU.

McCall plays club volleyball at MB Surf, which finished 5th at the Junior Olympics in the Open Division last year as well as finishing 2nd in the SCVA.

Sea Hawk Swimmers

El Camino College freshman Jonathan Diaz (Redondo Union High School) capped off a stellar season by winning the state title in the 400 Individual Medley at the CCCAA State Championships held at East Los Angeles College.

Diaz broke the four-minute barrier, touching the pad in 3:59.63 to set a new El Camino College record, breaking his own mark set the previous week in the conference championships by nearly seven seconds. The victory also earned Diaz the Performance of the Meet award on the men’s side.

Along with his win and record in the 400 IM, Diaz opened the weekend setting a new school record in the 500 freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:34.15.

Fellow Redondo Union alum Hogan Inscore took down another record later in the first day, finishing fourth overall in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.32. Shane Guerrero capped off the first day of the competition for the Warriors finishing 11th in the 3-meter dive with 207.85 points, just one week after taking home the South Coast Conference title.

On the second day, Inscore followed Diaz’s performance with a new Warriors’ record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.63. The 800 freestyle relay team of Inscore, Diaz, Mario Espinosa and Pat Fink then broke the final school record of the weekend with a 6:58.29 mark in the event.

Ch-Ching

Redondo Beach’s Danny Ching captured the 2013 Carolina Cup at Wrightsville Beach, NC claiming his second straight title while staking claim as the world’s fastest stand up paddler. Danny pulled away from the field in the 12.5-mile “Graveyard” Elite Race course, crossing the line exactly four minutes ahead of runner-up Eric Terrien of France (2:18:40. Australia’s Jamie Mitchell (2:19:42) finished third.

Rowing to gold

Manhattan Beach resident Steve Krum, general manager of Spectrum Athletic Club in El Segundo, earned his 3rd gold medal in the 32nd annual CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championship held in Boston. Competing in the 55-59 age category, Krum beat out more than 100 competitors in the 2,000 meter race in a competition that drew more than 10,000 spectators. He qualified for the championships by winning regional competitions in San Diego and Long Beach before claiming his third world title in four years.

“Rowing is one of the most intense and exhaustive workouts and one that requires tremendous focus to succeed,” said Krum. “I have found immense satisfaction in this form of working out and capturing the gold for the third time is just icing on the cake.”

Krum trains at Spectrum Athletic Clubs, which is equipped with state-of-the-art rowing apparatuses that allow him to properly train all year to fully prepare for competition.
