Mira Costa, Redondo advance in boys basketball playoffs

Bay League champion Redondo Union continued to roll with a 60-43 home victory over Newbury Park in the first round of the CIF Southern Section/Ford Division 2A Championships on Friday.

Ian Fox scored a game-high 24 points to lead the second-seeded Sea Hawks. Sebastian Lindner recorded nine points and Derek Biale and Chris Henderson added six points each.

Redondo (18-8) will travel to Santa Ana to face Godinez (15-12) in the second round Tuesday. Godinez eliminated No. 15 El Modena 30-28 in the opening round.

In Division 2AA, No. 5 Mira Costa defeated visiting Cathedral City 78-53 in the first round. Kevin Kim scored a team-high 18 points including four 3-pointers and Cole Feaster recorded 15 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals to lead the Mustangs.

Justin Strings added 12 points and 14 rebounds and Ryan Kaseff scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Mira Costa (20-9). The Mustangs host No. 12 Oxnard (18-9) on Tuesday.

All games with the exception of the final round are slated to begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Also in Division 2AA, No. 8 Lawndale (19-8) defeated Canyon (Canyon Country) 73-63 and will face the winner of the Perris-Redlands game in the second round.

Peninsula (11-16) had its season end with a 57-51 loss at Lancaster.

In Division 3AAA, West Torrance (18-10) upset third-seeded Hart 64-55. West, which earned an at-large berth out of the Bay League, is ranked No. 14 and will host No. 6 Royal (21-7) in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

Bay League runner-up Leuzinger (21-7) continued its march to a CIF title with a 61-47 second-round win at Esperanza. The top-seeded Olympians host No. 8 Atascadero (19-8) Tuesday.

Top-seeded Bishop Montgomery remained undefeated in Division 4AA, eliminating Twentynine Palms 86-45 in the second round Friday. The Knights (28-0) travel to No. 8 Harvard-Westlake for a quarterfinal match up Tuesday.

Also in Division 4AA, fourth-seeded Serra (22-6) defeated Sierra Canyon 60-55 and will host third-seeded JSerra of San Juan Capistrano (17-8) in the quarterfinals.
