Mira Costa girls earn share of Bay League basketball championship

Mira Costa (18-9, 8-2) gained a share of the Bay League title with West Torrance last Thursday after the Mustangs defeated Palos Verdes 73-48. Shaylyn Austin and Cameryn Chan each scored 14 points, Camille Mills recorded 11 points and Sophie Kohrogi added 10 points for Mira Costa.

The Mustangs are seeded tenth in Division 2AA as Miranda Biteler leads her team into the CIF Southern Section/Ford Girls Basketball Championships in her second year as head coach.

Mira Costa will host San Gabriel (14-14) in the opening round Saturday. Second round action is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 20. All games with the exception of the finals are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.

Peninsula (15-12) was awarded an at-large berth in Division 2AA and will travel to No. 14 Chino (19-3).

Redondo Union (16-11, 7-3) routed Leuzinger 55-11 in its Bay League finale to finish in third place. Inara Nyingifa recorded 18 points and eight rebounds and Bella Hall added nine points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Coach Marcelo Enriquez’s Sea Hawks are ranked sixth in Division 2A and will host Arroyo (14-12) on Saturday.

Bay League co-champion West (21-7) is the fifth seed in Division 2A and earned a bye in the opening round. The Warriors will face the Eastside-Moorpark winner on Wednesday.

In Division 3AAA, Pioneer League co-champion South Torrance (13-12) is seeded seventh and earned a first-round bye. The Spartans host No. 10 Glendora (19-9) in the second round Saturday.

Ninth-seeded North Torrance (17-10) defeated visiting Cerritos 64-38 in the first round on Thursday and will travel to No. 8 Indio (17-8) Saturday.

Eleventh-ranked Torrance (12-11) eliminated host Colony 63-42 in the first round and will play at No. 6 Rio Mesa (13-13) Saturday.

In Division 3AA, Palos Verdes (12-16) was awarded an at-large berth out of the Bay League and is ranked No. 15. The Sea Kings eliminated host Firebaugh 63-10 in the first-round game  Thursday and will host No. 2 Santa Barbara (20-7) in the second round Saturday.

Ocean League runner-up Hawthorne (12-12) was seeded 14th but lost to visiting Corona Del Mar 56-52 in the opening round.

In Division 4AA, Del Rey champion Serra (22-5) earned the third seed and ran over visiting Rolling Hills Prep 65-17 in the first round Thursday.  The Cavaliers host No. 14 Twentynine Palms (22-5) in the second round Saturday.

Bishop Montgomery (21-7) finished third in the Del Rey League and is ranked seventh. The Knights eliminated Templeton 78-45 and will travel to face No. 10 Harvard-Westlake (14-13) in the second round.

El Segundo (15-13) earned an at-large berth out of the Pioneer League but lost to No. 13 Marlborough 57-52 in the first round.
