Police Beat

Pedestrian Accident

A man was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon attempting to cross six lanes of Pacific Coast Highway traffic.

The pedestrian was struck by a black BMW heading north at the 1100 block of PCH, between Aviation Boulevard and Pier Avenue, about 1:45 p.m., police said. The victim suffered massive head trauma and internal bleeding, and remains in critical condition of Tuesday morning.

Witness reports indicate that the man ran from the west side of PCH to the median strip. The northbound BMW, driving in the center lane, attempted to avoid hitting the pedestrian but was unable to do so.

The driver, who was uninjured, remained at the scene until officers arrived, and is not suspected of driving improperly, police said. PCH was closed for about twenty minutes as authorities tended to the victim and assessed the crash.

Two crosswalks sit within one hundred feet on either side of the site of the collision. Police urged residents to follow traffic safety regulations and to use designated cross areas.

“According to the preliminary investigation, it looks like the pedestrian was at fault,” Higgins said. “He essentially was playing ‘Frogger’ to get across the street. There is no safe way to do what he was doing.”ER
