
Redondo’s boys cross country team used a strong finish to place third in the CIF Division 2 State finals at Woodward Park in Fresno, scoring 183 points behind champion Westlake (84) and Saugus (97).
Evan Malone-White and Dustin Herold finished 31st and 32nd, respectively, completing the 5K course in 16 minutes, two seconds.
William Tait (63rd, 16:25), Waseem Radi (67th, 16:27), Garrett Klatte (76th, 16:31), Carlos Suarez (83rd, 16:33) and Takhiro Yamaya (117th, 16:53) also helped Redondo.
In Division 3, Palos Verdes’ boys team failed to repeat as champions, trailing St. John Bosco (70) with 119 points. Ryan Dreibelbis placed 10th for the Sea Kings with a time of 15:45.
In girls competition, Bishop Montgomery’s Danielle Shanahan placed second in the Division 4 race with a time of 18:12.
In Division 2, Mira Costa finished fifth, just ahead of Bay League rival Redondo on a sixth-runner tiebreaker after both team finished with 156 points.
Abby Hong led the Mustangs, placing 13th at 18:18. Lauren Hagedorn (26th, 18:40), Emma Lautanen (33rd, 18:48), Kara Jeong (61st, 19:16), Natasha Brunstein (68th, 19:23), Kellie Jeong (71st, 19:24) and Lauren Inouye (124th, 20:20) also ran well for Mira Costa.
Redondo had two top-ten finishers Kayla Ferron (6th, 18:07) and Amber Gore (9th, 18:12) but had a fall-off after Cara Ulizio’s 12th-place finish at 18:17.
Nicole Pederson (86th, 19:41), Paige Sullivan (89th, 19:47), Erin South (102nd, 19:58) and Anavey Hiehle (113th, 20:11) rounded out Redondo’s team.
Palos Verdes’ girls team reached the podium at the state meet for the fourth straight year, placing third in Division 3 with 160 points sandwiched by Bonita (83) and Cathedral Catholic (143).
