Rivals split basketball showdowns
After Mira Costa’s girls basketball team thwarted a Redondo comeback with a 40-29 victory over the Sea Hawks Tuesday at Redondo, the Redondo’s boys team used a 10-4 run to open the fourth quarter in its game, increasing its 44-41 lead to defeat Mira Costa 70-46. Brandon Boyd appears to have fully recovered from the anterior cruciate ligament surgery that sidelined him most of the football season. Boyd led Redondo (13-5, 2-1) with 21 points while Brandon Trias added 13 points and Jamar Cannon scored 13 points. The win sets up a showdown with league favorite Leuzinger (12-6. 3-0) in a 7:30 p.m. game tomorrow at Redondo. Leuzinger is ranked No. 3 in Division 1A while Redondo holds the tenth spot in Division 2AA. The Sea Hawks continue Bay League action Tuesday when they host Palos Verdes at 7:30 p.m. Mira Costa’s Elliott Ozer scored a game-high 23 points and gathered 10 rebounds for the Mustangs, but it wasn’t enough for the seventh-ranked team in Division 2A. Eric Mochalski had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Thomas Johnson added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Mira Costa.
