The Redondo Beach School Board discussed the future of parking at the high school at their meeting on June 12. Nathan Herrero from MVE Architects outlined the potential spaces around the campus that could be better utilized for school and athletic event parking.

Depending on city approval and budgetary constraints, over 150 parking spots could be added around campus by using underutilized space. A drop-off zone and bus parking could also be added to the main lot to help alleviate neighbors’ frustrations with the school’s traffic impact within the neighborhood. The plan could remove unused temporary classrooms and rework space currently used for school construction and turn the areas into parking spaces. Additionally, the bus garage near the tennis courts could be removed to provide 26 additional parking spots.

The plan does not currently include incorporating the spaces at Redondo Shores. Rough terrain also impedes connecting sidewalks, especially when designing a path to Parras Middle School.

“We brought forward the concepts of what we’d like to do…[The next step] is to bring forward an agenda item where you can discuss, vote and say what you want to move forward on,” said Chief Business Officer Janet Redella.

Future meetings will be held to discuss the potential demolition of the bus garage, lighting, signage and the overall budget of the project.
