A swarm of bees took up residence in a bicycle basket parked in front of Cantina Real on Pier Plaza Saturday afternoon.

Melinda Irvin brought her son Josh to the restaurant for a birthday lunch. After eating, they found Hermosa Beach Community Services Officer Janet Dreste warning passersby to stay away from Irvin’s bike, which was parked in front of the restaurant.

Dreste speculated that the swarm came from a hive in one of the palms that line Pier Plaza. Cantina Real owner Joline Blase said a swarm of bees took up residence on one of her patio tables a few weeks ago.

A bee keeper used a shop vac plugged into his pick-up truck’s battery to collect the bees from Irvin’s bike basket.
