Manhattan Beach Police Beat

International drug bust

Manhattan Beach Police Department Detective Don Brown was recently recognized at the White House, where he received the 2018 Land Interdiction and Apprehension Award. The City Council recognized Brown at this week’s meeting.

Brown was assigned to a regional police effort to combat drug trafficking, called the Los Angeles Interagency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force, or LA IMPACT. While on that assignment, Brown served as a lead in a large drug trafficking and money laundering bust in San Diego County that included the arrest of 26 suspects, the recovery of $2.2 million in cash, 186 kilos of cocaine, 21 pounds of methamphetamine, and 2 pounds of heroin.

“Detective Brown stood tall as one of our very own from Manhattan Beach,” MBPD Chief Derrick Abell told the Council. “We talk about drug interdictions and how important it is to fight against the dangers of drugs out there. The fact that Det. Brown is out there fighting on our behalf, serving with other agencies, taking stuff off the streets that may harm our community, his efforts do not go unnoticed.”

Abell also expressed admiration for seeing Det. Brown in a suit and tie.

“I will tell you, this is a shining moment,” Abell said. “After tonight, we probably won’t see him like this ever again.”

Brown thanked his wife and baby daughter as his “MVPs” and the city and police department for allowing him to be a part of law enforcement.

“Thanks to the city for giving me a job and to the police department for sending me out to LA IMPACT, especially the chief and Lt. Sabosky,” Brown said.
