Incumbents David Lesser and Amy Howorth were reelected to the Manhattan Beach City Council by a comfortable margin Tuesday night.
“This was entirely a community effort. We are students, CEOs, mothers, artists, dreamers and freaks in this funky little beach town and we won’t let it be taken from us. This was our day. It was individual contributions versus a Goliath oil company that thought it could just throw money at us.”
Measure B, which proposed replacing the AES power plant with a mixed use development, appears to have been defeated as 51 percent of voters rejected it.
Christian Anthony Horvath and Candace Allen Nafissi will square off in a District 3 runoff.
Not since the 1972 South End Redevelopment ballot measure has a Hermosa Beach election elicited such strong emotional feelings. Community leaders have expressed concerns about the vote’s aftermath.
