To promote Sunday’s Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race, from Catalina Island to the Manhattan Beach pier, local paddlers gathered at the Manhattan pier Monday morning for a restaging of a classic April 1987 photo of the South Bay’s then hottest surfers. Paddler Doug Weems (second from left in Monday’s photo) also appears in the early photo (third from left). Both photos were taken by surf photographer Mike Balzer. The paddlers are (left to right) Brian Kingston, Doug Weems, Katie Hazelrigg, Heidi Gastler, DJ O’Brien, Jay Russell, Robert Parucha, Max First, Kevin Cody and Caleb Brown. The surfers are Ty Cukr, Chris Wells, Doug Weems, Mick Barber, Brooke Chimelewski, Jimmy Miller, Brian Bradfield and Chance Barber.
The Catalina Classic begins at 6 a.m. at Two Harbors on Catalina island. The top finishers are expected to reach the Manhattan Beach pier shortly after 11 a.m. Photos by Mike Balzer
