Dirty Phunk To Shake Yo Booty!

Dumpstaphunk plays Saint Rocke Saturday night.

Dumpstaphunk will be dropping by Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach this Saturday night. They come straight outta’ New Orleans with a brand of funk highly acclaimed to get your booty shaking itself onto the Richter scale.

Giving a whole new meaning to the peculiar expression “Dead on the heavy funk” (James Brown), Dumpsta is pushing the envelope of the genre itself.

In an interview with Dennis Cook for JamBase.com, Ivan Neville of Dumpstaphunk said, “We know what this music is. No one can ever do what they did again, but we can take what we’ve gotten from that and go on with it and take it somewhere else… We are capable of doing that stuff, but we try to take it to the next level. We honor tradition, but at the same time, we’re trying to push it forward.”

A funk of our own for our generation (and a new one for yours). With respect to their honored roots and forefathers, rather than do exactly what’s already been done, Dumpstaphunk is exploring new horizons while pushing funk music ahead. And forefathers there are; literally.

Dumpstaphunk is Ivan Neville (son of Aaron Neville of the legendary Neville Brothers, circa 1976), Ian Neville (son of Art Neville, also of the Neville Brothers), Nick Daniels, Raymond Weber, and Tony Hall. Although an awful name, the band could easily be called Pedigreephunk.

Hall’s musical collaborations include Trey Anastasio (Phish), Dave Matthews, Harry Connick Jr., Jewel, and Emmy Lou Harris. Weber’s: the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Trey Anastasio, and Harry Connick Jr. Daniels’: the Neville Brothers, Etta James, and Boz Scaggs. Ian Neville has worked with Galactic, Funky Meters, Soulive, and the Neville Brothers. Ivan Neville with the Rolling Stones, Keith Richards, Government Mule, New Orleans Social Club, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, Spin Doctors, Don Henley, Robbie Robertson (The Band), Rufus, Paula Abdul, and of course the Neville Brothers.

That’s a lot to take in, but what’s coming out is a supercharged, urban-tinged funk power that’s highlighted by jazz and R&B sentiments, topped with jam galore. This is a New Orleans real-deal band, a festival band: a Jam Cruise, Bonnaroo, Earthdance, Burning Man band – in our hometown! All that really needs to be said is: Booyah! You can skip the gym if you go to this one, this is the type of show that’ll make you sweat.

Dumpstaphunk performs at Saint Rocke on Saturday; doors at 6 p.m. and show at 9. Also performing is Money Mark, and Spidergawd. Tickets are $15; contact Saint Rocke for more info at (310) 372-0035. If funk is your flavor and you like Dumpsta, we recommend you also look up Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove (founder of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band), Newsoul Underground (guitarist of Dirty Dozen), Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, and Spam Allstars on DirtyHippieRadio.com.
