Nearly two decades ago, Dennis May, of Manhattan Beach, was invited to volunteer at a prom for special needs students. The annual prom was hosted by The Exceptional Kids Organization (EKO).
Friday evening May emceed EKO’s annual prom at the Westdrift Manhattan Beach Hotel.
“That first prom I attended was such a joyous event, that I became an EKO board member,” May said. “My focus is on fundraising because it’s an all volunteer organization. All the money goes to the kids.”
EKO was founded 24 years ago to provide social and educational programs to special needs kids, and their families. It offers dances, workshops and talent shows throughout the year to over 500 South Bay families.
EKO also provides grants to special education teachers for supplies, and supports high school students through its Beth Muraida Memorial Scholarship Program.
