Twice this season the South Bay Boardriders/Jack’s surf contest had been postponed because of big wave forecasts. The Boardriders Club delayed the contests out of concern for the 50 to 100 groms who compete. Based on the contest on Sunday, February 7, when the event was finally held, the fears weren’t unfounded. The surf was as the days the contest was postponed. But it wasn’t the groms working the inside sections who kept PWC Lifeguards Ivan Wilkins and Dave Cartridge busy. It was a leashless longboarder swept out to sea without his longboard and older competitors taking a pounding on the paddleouts, though they all waved off the lifeguards who offered their assistance.
