United States Lifesaving AssociationAquatics: Alison Riddle, of Hermosa Beach, successfully defended her title as women’s champion of the U.S. Lifesaving Association’s National Lifeguard Championship in Cape May, N.J. Riddle’s 59 points edged L.A. County teammate and Manhattan Beach resident Taylor Spivey’s 58.25. Riddle won the Iron Woman competition that included swim, board, Skisurf and beach sprint events on a 1,400-meter course. She finished second to Spivey in the American Iron Woman competition that included the swim, board and beach sprint events. The L.A. County lifeguard team won its 25th consecutive title and 37th since the competition’s inception in 1970. Defending champion Brian Murphy, of Redondo Beach, placed second in the men’s division.

 

Tryouts for the Beach Cities Swimming team take place at the Redondo Union High School pool on alternate Mondays beginning Monday. Swim lessons, lap swim, and all other programming will also resume when the pool reopens. Community members are encouraged to join family swims on Saturday and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. and for lap swims Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.-2 .pm. The 36th Annual Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race will be held Sunday, Aug. 28. The 32-mile race starts at 6 a.m. at the Isthmus on Catalina Island. Top finishers reach the Manhattan Beach pier just after 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.CatalinaClassicPaddleboardRace.org.

 

Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ) has begun a Masters Swim Program at the new Redondo Union High School pool with Tuesday and Thursday workouts 5:30-6:30 a.m. and 8-9 p.m. Free introductory workouts are offered. Visit www.swim.net/scaq and click the Free Workout tab at the top.

 

The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation (JMMF) has been invited to be the first relay team in the long history of the Catalina Classic paddleboard race, which will be held Sunday, Aug. 28. JMMF has been working with the Wounded Warrior Battalion from Camp Pendleton and, with the support of paddlers Kyle Daniels and Matt Walls, is creating a relay team consisting five or six strong paddlers to join forces with a few injured Marines. Bodybuilding: The United Natural Bodybuilding Association (UNBA) Samson & Delilah USA Muscle Classic will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Playhouse, 710 Pier Avenue. Open to all natural men and women, competitions include national qualifiers for the Fitness Southern California Regional Pageant, Figure America Southern Cal, Ms. Bikini Southern California and Model Southern California. Basketball: The HAX / ARC Youth Basketball League is holding registration for Recreation and Travel Team divisions. Open to boys and girls grades 1-8, the league begins Sept. 17-19. Volleyball: The Corona Light Wide Open (CLWO) makes its fourth tour stop of 2011 in Hermosa Beach Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20-21 with a cash purse of $75,000. Played on the north side of the Hermosa Beach Pier, the tournament begins at 9 a.m. each day. Saturday’s competition includes Men’s Open, AA, A, B, Novice and Women’s Open, AA, A and Novice divisions. Sunday’s action features Men’s and Women’s Open semifinals and finals, Coed Open and Recreational along with Coed 4’s Open and Recreational competition. Entry fee for the Open Division is $100 (deadline 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17). Amateur Division deadline is 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. Fee for 4’s competition is $100, all other divisions $60. California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) hosts the Junior Hermosa Beach Open for boys and girls 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U divisions beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Hermosa Beach Pier. The same weekend at the Manhattan Beach Pier, Men’s and Women’s Open competition takes place Saturday followed by Men’s and Women’s A tournaments on Sunday. Registration and volunteer positions are now open for the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) Fall Season. The 8-week league in Hermosa Beach at South Park will run from September until November. The USYVL is also looking for volunteer coaches, site directors, and clinicians (volleyball instructors). Fitness: AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach is offering its Open Rock Wall and Ropes Course on Saturdays from 12-3 p.m. (Rock Wall is also open Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Whether a single child, the whole family, or just a group of friends (Ages 5 and up for rock wall, 8 and up for ropes course), the course provides challenges of solving problems and overcoming obstacles. Groups of seven will start every hour and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete the courses. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $8-$20 depending on activities.
