At the start of 2014, a skyward spiraling, stainless steel sculpture titled “Boundless Spirit” was installed at the entrance to El Camino College. The sculpture is by James Russell, an El Camino alumnus and teacher who went on to international acclaim for his work.
On Tuesday, Russell presented his two-foot tall, working model of “Boundless Spirit” to Tom Fallo, another El Camino College alumnus. The occasion was Fallo’s retirement after 25 years of working at El Camino, the past 20 years as the college’s president.
“Boundless Spirit” was a fitting thank you, explained trustee Bill Beverly, who was on the hiring committee that named Fallo president in 1995.
During Fallo’s tenure, Beverly said, the 50-year-old campus underwent a physical and academic transformation, thanks in large part to two bond measures Fallo spearheaded, totaling $750 million.
Russell recalled walking across campus with Fallo and having to stop regularly so the president could ask students who their favorite teacher was.
Fallo, in thanking the teachers and college staff, said he asked students about their favorite teachers because he wanted to forge in their minds, positive memories of what El Camino had meant to them. ER
