Track stars advance to CIF finals

 

Mira Costa and Redondo will be sending eight athletes from each school to compete in the Division 2 track and field finals of the CIF Southern Section-Toyota Championships to be held Saturday at Cerritos College.

In the prelims held last Saturday at Moorpark High School, Redondo’s Chloe Curtis had the fastest times in the 800 (2:12.52) and the 1,600 (4:55.73) while teammate Lyndsey Mull placed 4th in the 800 (2:14.29) and 2nd in the 1,600 (4:59.40).

Sea Hawks Laura O’Neill finished 7th in the 3,200 (10:59) and Haley Miller placed 7th in the triple jump (35 feet, 9.75 inches) to advance 

Mira Costa distance runners Savannah Pio (10:43.17) and Aryn Foland (10:49.05) finished first and second in the 3,200 and Lauren Wellbaum set school records in the 110 hurdles (15.05) and 300 hurdles (44.88) for the Mustangs.

The Redondo boys’ 1,600-relay team of Remington Besnoin, Simon Schermerhorn, Christian Bassman and Ryan Hyman also broke a school record with a time of 3:23.68.

Mira Costa shot putter J.R. Tavai qualified with an 8th-place toss of 52 feet, 11.75 inches, Michael Koger advanced with a 5th-place finish in the 300 hurdles (39.10) and the Mustang’s 1,600-relay team of Alex Norocea, Joe McMahon, Rico Wright and Koger advanced to the finals. ER
