Wpromote and Mike Mothner are on top of the world [wide web]

It’s Friday morning, and Mike Mothner is beginning to segue from the work-hard half of his life to the play-hard half. The blue-jeaned 29-year-old glides through his busy office suite overlooking LAX, touching base with skinny young employees wearing hip eyeglasses as he guides his $10 million-a-year, web-based corporation that has landed him on the […]
Theater Review: “Burn This”
As its title suggest, “Burn This” is an incendiary play with passion and emotion at its core, which ignites after Pale (Adam Rothenberg) comes to the apartment his late brother Robbie shared with dancer-choreographer Anna and the openly gay Larry (Brooks Ashmanskas). Although Anna has a warm relationship with a rich, scriptwriting boyfriend, Burton (Ken […]
On local government: ten years later
It was ten years ago this week that I attended my last meeting as a Redondo Beach City Councilman and filed my first “On Local Government” column for this newspaper. The idea was that, given the paucity of turnout for local elections, usually just barely in the double digits, perhaps people didn’t know how essential […]
Swell Magnet Surf Forecast
Combo swells with wind Thursday morning will see new energy, with a wind swell, a NW ground swell and some deep water SW energy building through day. The NW facing breaks will clock in at head high to overhead, while the lesser exposed beaches will see chest to shoulder high surf. Stiff S/SW winds look […]
Big Hopes for “Little Women”
Director Jack Messenger is gung-ho on the musical that’s based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott “Some years ago, Lois and I went to New York on one of our little Broadway junkets,” says Jack Messenger. “We went there ostensibly to see ‘Wicked’ and a few other things. I like the talkies, Lois likes […]
Lesser is more at Waterman’s photo show [PHOTOS]

“Pitchers and Pictures” was the aptly named title of a show of Rick Lesser’s surf photography on Thursday, Feb. 24 at Waterman’s on Hermosa’s Pier Plaza.
Blue Water and Bluegrass
My general rule of thumb is: If it’s got banjo in it, it’s probably awesome. The only thing that makes banjo better is a violin accompaniment. Fiddle is like the fair maiden upon the shore, bereft from her traveling banjo-mister lost at sea; lying in wait, while crooning songs of adventure and longing. And when […]
BBR sues city over records requests
The citizen group Building a Better Redondo has filed another lawsuit against the City of Redondo Beach seeking more legal documents and fuller disclosure of the city’s litigation costs in its ongoing legal battle with BBR. BBR Chair Jim Light said that the lawsuit, filed March 28, was made necessary by the city’s lack of […]
International Baccalaureate put on hold
Teachers talked. Administrators and school board members listened. Two weeks after more than 50 high school teachers flooded a Redondo Beach Unified School District Board of Education meeting to protest the potential implementation of the International Baccalaureate program, district leaders this week announced that plans to apply for the program have been suspended. RBUSD Superintendent […]
The Vitality Quest

Dan Buettner was only a few years out of college when, in 1987, he launched what would be the first of many quests. Originally, he intended to bicycle from his native Minnesota to the southern tip of South America. But when he learned that wouldn’t set any world records, he did what he is wont […]
Dick “The Fox” Mobley gets bronze plaque on Surfers Walk of Fame
The best Christmas I ever had was the year I was 12 and saw a shiny, brand new, blue, 8-foot-6 Bing Surfboard shaped by Dick Mobley standing next to the Christmas tree with silver ribbon and big, gold bow. It was 1960. Dick had already shaped for the era’s biggest names — Dale Velzy, Greg […]
Frank scouts for books
Last summer, Girl Scout Ann-Marie Franko sent out a call for books to her friends, local businesses and the people on her parents’ Bob and Melanie Franko’s Christmas card list. Her goal was to collect books for the family literacy program at the Harbor City Boys and Girls Club. The project was part of a public service requirement for the Girl Scout Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest award.
