Swell Magnet Surf Forecast

Combo swells with wind

Thursday morning will see new energy, with a wind swell, a NW ground swell and some deep water SW energy building through day. The NW facing breaks will clock in at head high to overhead, while the lesser exposed beaches will see chest to shoulder high surf. Stiff S/SW winds look to slaughter the ocean surface early, so your best bet will be a wind protected/kelpy spot.

On Friday morning we’ll see more of the same as far as swell goes. The wind swell should be bigger, as will be the NW ground swell and the SW energy. Usually, a nice combination of swells like this will have you licking your chops, but if the wind models are on the right scent we’re in for some more sh#%%y conditions.

The conditions, on paper, are painting a bleak picture, with 6-18 m.p.h. breezes out of the West all day long. Add into the mix an 80 percent chance of rain and things could get pretty ugly. Look for a high air temp of 61 degrees.

Sometimes when these fronts zip in you’ll get that unforeseeable window of SE breezes, so although it looks hopeless, nothing’s been etched in stone just yet.

For Saturday morning’s high school surf contest and Walk of Fame inductions in Hermosa there will still be plenty of surf and the winds are supposed to ease up considerably late Friday night.

The conditions are looking good with 5-7 m.p.h. breezes out of the NE/NNE until around 11 a.m. and then go 10-12 m.p.h. out of the West for the afternoon. Look for a high air temp of 60 degrees and a 30 percent chance of rain.

By Sunday morning things will start to back down quickly. The SW energy will be smaller and have much longer time gaps between the sets and the NW swell will dip into the chest high zone.

The conditions should be pretty fair again, with Easterly, offshore winds at 4-6 m.p.h. until 11 a.m. and West winds at 10-12 m.p.h. until sundown. No mention of rain, so we should be in for some smooth sailing. Look for a high air temp of 61 degrees.

Lastly, I have been talking about that epic swell from last Thursday the 24th and stumbled on a great little online magazine that’s dedicated to the South Bay and has excellent coverage of that swell. Check it out at www.civiccouch.com. ER
