People often forget that Jay was a surfer before he was a skateboarder.

Trouble in Paradise: “Dido and Aeneas” and “Bluebeard’s Castle”

Contrary to what some people may think, not all operas are Wagnerian in length, and some (it’s true!) clock in at about one hour. Two of the latter, similar and dissimilar at the same time, are Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas,” composed in 1688 or possibly a couple of years earlier, and Bela Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s Castle,” which dates to 1918. LA Opera is presenting both of them as a double-bill, and as conceived and directed by Barrie Kosky they are very much worth seeing.

Kidnapping victim shares her story

A South Redondo Beach woman who was the victim of a kidnapping and alleged attempted murder/suicide last month that left the perpetrator dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound wants to set the record straight.

“Timothy had full-intent and plans to murder me that day,” the 22-year-old victim wrote in an email to various news outlets. “Words cannot begin to explain the horrific and terrifying trauma I experienced that day, and am continuing to cope with.”
