Aquatics: Mira Costa’s aquatics program will be hosting a Junior Lifeguard Conditioning class in preparation for the Jr. Lifeguard Swim Test. Sessions run from April 16-May 4 and May 7-25 and will be led by Coach Jon Reichardt and assisted by members of the Mira Costa swim and water polo teams. Cycling: The Beach Cities Cycling Club, Beach Cities Health & Fitness Center and South Bay Bicycling Coalition have joined together to offer a free 10-week A-to-Z Safe Cycling course designed for beginners to low-intermediate cyclists. The highly structured cycling course will teach the basics to highly skilled techniques, how to ride and maintain your bike, encourage you to develop and practice safe cycling skills, and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Course instructors are USA Cycling Coaches and League Cycling Instructors. Classes meet from 9-10 a.m. each Sunday starting April 15 with an optional 1-2 hour ride following the session. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have access to a safe and dependable bike (suitable for the road with multiple gears), a helmet and be a BCC Club member ($25 a year). All training sessions will be held in the Beach Cities area and class size is limited to the first 20 people to sign up. The Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association (LAVRA) has announced its 2012 race season to be held at the Velo Sports Center, 18400 Avalon Blvd., Carson. Located at the Home Depot Center, the facility provides a safe and healthy environment to ride and is the only world class indoor velodrome in North America hosting athletes from all over the world. The Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races has started, and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 30 on a course in Carson, near Torrance. Often called the “race of truth,” a time trial is a race against the clock. There are men’s and women’s categories for several different age groups. Racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. The Baxter Series is sponsored by the South Bay Wheelmen, a club for racers, aspiring racers, and those who just love to ride their bike. Participants in the Baxter races must be a club member and have a US Cycling Federation license, but membership and a one-day USCF license can both be obtained at the race. Volleyball: California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding the Campsurf.com Men’s and Women’s A tournament on Saturday, April 14 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Fee is $42.50 per team. To register, visit www.cbva.com.

Running: Registration is open for the 6th edition of the Hermosa Beach 5000 and City Walk to be held Saturday, April 21. The event includes separate 5K races for men and women along with Kid’s Races. Men begin the 5K run at 8 a.m. followed by the women and the City Walk at 8:45 a.m. and the Kid’s Races that start at 9:50. The fast, cloverleaf course features Pier Plaza, The Strand and the Hermosa Beach Pier. Awards are given to the top five in all 50 age divisions and all participants receive the 6th edition T-Shirt and “Livestrong” type bracelet. Participant medals are given to all kids. Skateboarding: Skatepark PV, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, has teamed up with Beachsports and the City of Rolling Hills Estates to host the 2nd Annual SK8 the Hill Event on Saturday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the basketball court of Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Boulevard, Rolling Hills Estates, just north of PV Dr. North. The free event includes ramps, rails and grind boxes to skate on. Food trucks will be there as well as local teams. Surfing: The South Bay Boardriders Club continues its 2011-12 South Bay Surf Series Saturday at 26th Street, Manhattan Beach (sponsored by Pier Surf). Contests are open to non members and include divisions from micro groms (9 and under) up to legends (50+). Future contests will be: Saturday, April 21 at El Porto (sponsored by Surf Concepts) and Saturday May 19 at the Manhattan Pier (sponsored by Spyder Surf).

Soccer: Girls ages 6-12 are invited to participate in the Mira Costa Youth Girls Summer Soccer Camp to be held July 9-13 at the Marine Sports Complex, 1751 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach. The camp is led by Mira Costa Head Coach Patty Perkinson and will include counselors from the Mustang’s girls soccer team. Cost is $195. To sign up, visit www.miracostagirlssoccer.com.

Fitness: AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach invites family members ages 5 and up to improve balance, strength and power on its 35-foot outdoor rock walls, which are open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $8. Also available is a ropes course where groups of seven (ages 8 and up) start each half hour every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost for the ropes course is $20; advance registration is recommended.
