The black smoke billowing across the South Bay skies Saturday morning was from a fire at the West Rock recycling center, near Torrance  and Normandy boulevards, just west of the 110 Harbor  Freeway. The fire was reported at 10:15 a.m. More than 160 firefighters from the Los Angeles, Torrance and other  departments fought the fire. The recycling center is located in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County known as the Harbor Gateway. West Rock is one of the world’s largest recycling companies, according to its website.
