Burglary suspect shot by resident in Redondo Beach

A suspected burglar was shot in Redondo Beach yesterday morning after being caught, mid-theft, by the resident of the home.

According to Redondo Beach Police Lt. Todd Heywood, at 2:50 a.m. officers reported to the 2000 block of Nelson Ave., responding to a shots-fired call. There they found Redondo Beach resident Laurencia Gamboa, 33, being detained by the victim of an attempted burglary.

The victim and his friend were inside the victim’s residence when they were notified via phone of movement in the residence’s detached garage. Using a wireless camera surveillance system, the victim watched as Gamboa approached a motorcycle that was stored in the garage.

The victim and his friend then armed themselves — one with a handgun, the other with a rifle, according to police reports — and approached the garage, where they found Gamboa walking the motorcycle out of the garage and down the driveway.

According to Heywood, the victim and friend ordered the suspect to get down. He refused, dropped the bike and began to run, then stopped, turned and confronted the victim.

The victim then shot Gamboa, hitting him once in the leg. Gamboa fled, and was then overtaken and overpowered by the victim.

Gamboa was transported to Harbor General Hospital, treated, released into RBPD custody and booked into jail. He has been charged with

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the entire event, including the shooting, Heywood said.
