
Sierra Canyon’s many trips to the free throw line paid off for the visiting team as the Trailblazers defeated Redondo 70-74 Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Open Division playoffs.
In a fast-paced game, Sierra Canyon made 28-of-39 attempts at the charity stripe while Redondo was limited to five free throws in 11 tries.
Redondo held a 57-51 lead in the fourth quarter but a 3-pointer by Sierra Canyon’s Remy Martin put the Trailblazers up 61-60.
Holding a 69-68 lead, Sierra Canyon made five of six free throws in the final 20.7 second of the game to pull out the victory.
Morgan Means led Redondo with 21 points, Leland Green added 13 points and Ryse Williams had 11 points for the Sea Hawks.
Redondo (22-5) drops into the Consolation bracket and will play at Compton (17-4) in a quarterfinal contest Thursday at 7 p.m.
Compton fell into the Consolation bracket after losing to Centennial/Corona 83-64 in the first round. Compton defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary 60-53 on Tuesday.
Sierra Canyon (25-3) advances and will host second-seeded Bishop Montgomery (26-1) in the Open Division semifinals Friday at 7 p.m.
Bishop Montgomery, the Open division defending champions, escaped with a 58-56 win over Damien after David Singleton’s 3-pointer at the end of regulation sent to game into overtime.
Top-seeded Chino Hills (29-0) defeated Bay League runner-up Inglewood 112-78 and will host fourth-seeded Mater Dei (27-3). Inglewood (20-6) will host Crespi (24-4) in the Consolation quarterfinals on Friday.
Crespit lost to Damien 65-61 in the opening round before defeating Orange Lutheran 80-72 on Tuesday.
Consolation semifinals will be held Tuesday or Wednesday with the finals taking place Thursday or Friday, Mar. 3-4.
In Division 2A, Lawndale lost at top-seeded Santa Barbara 84-69 and Bay League representative Morningside was eliminated in Division 4A falling to visiting La Salle 67-52.
In Division 5AA, Chadwick lost at top-seeded St. Joseph/Santa Maria 105-74.
