Over Verandas
New York Food Company announced this week that it has signed a five-year lease extension for the Verandas Beach House, the wedding and event venue it has operated for the past 20 years. The lease extension puts to rest longtime rumors that the former Orville and Wilbur’s restaurant site at Rosecrans and Manhattan Beach avenues was to be developed as a destination hotel. Correction
An article titled “Utility undergrounding underway again” in the July 4 edition contained factual inaccuracies. First, petitions are not a part of the assessment process, and new districts require a 66 percent approval, not 60 percent, which was the former approval rate. Second, votes are not based on property values, but on the assessment cost itself.
“This point is important because it is the most asked and misunderstood question we get,” said Stephanie Katsouleas, director of Public Works. “Residents think that if they have a ‘nicer’ or ‘bigger’ house, they’ll have to pay more, which is incorrect.”
Finally, the article stated that those whose household incomes are below $105,000 can avoid assessment. This is inaccurate; those under $105,000 can receive assistance, but it is a sliding scale going up to $105,000.

Chili Cook-off
To celebrate community service in the South Bay, Kinecta Federal Credit Union will host its annual Community Celebration & Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kinecta Manhattan Beach Branch parking lot (1440 Rosecrans Ave.) in Manhattan Beach.
This free public event will feature food, giveaways, and fun activities for the whole family. Attendees will have the chance to taste and vote for the best chili during the Chili Cook-Off competition. A special recognition to local police and fire departments will also take place for their service and dedication.
In recognition of those committed to community service, attendees may contribute a small $2 donation fee for food and $1 for raffle tickets. Proceeds from these contributions will benefit the Hawthorne nonprofits, Mychal’s Learning Place and the Richstone Family Center.
