Downtown First Fridays

On the first Friday of every month, 24 downtown businesses will extend their hours to 9 p.m. for Downtown After Sundown which kicks off tomorrow, April 1.

From 6 to 9 p.m., shoppers can enjoy music, trunk shows featuring new spring lines, special offers from some stores, and “everything that is cool about downtown Manhattan Beach until later in the evening.”

For more information or a list of participating businesses, visit www.downtownmanhattanbeach.com.

Free Toilet Giveaway

Leadership Manhattan Beach encourages residents to swap up to two toilets installed before Jan. 1, 1992, that use more than 3.5 gallons per flush, for free high-efficiency toilets that use 1.28 gallons per flush, on Saturday, April 9. The date of toilets can be checked on the inside of their tanks.

Toilets from single-family homes, condominiums, townhomes, duplexes and mobile homes can be traded out at the giveaway event. Owners of apartment complexes should call the number below. The new, high-efficiency toilets must be installed within two weeks of the pick-up date.

Old toilets can be returned on Saturday, April 23 and should not be brought on the day of pick-up. Residents must pre-qualify by calling 866-861-0784 and bring a current water bill and photo ID.

Clothing Swap

Rather than throwing out baby, child and maternity clothing, parents can swap gently used items with each other while their kids play at a Peace.Love.Swap event on Saturday at AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave. Toys, movies, strollers, highchairs, bouncy seats and other kid items can also be swapped.

The Peace.Love.Swap’s mission is to keep these items out of landfills.

The cost is $5 — along with gently used, laundered clothes on hangers or other items — and includes free and discounted playtime for kids. RSVP is required. Items can be dropped off between 10:30 a.m. and noon. The swap will take place from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Leftover items will be donated to charities.

Student Immunizations

Beginning July 1, students entering 7th through 12th grades next school year will be required to provide proof that they have been vaccinated with the Tdap Pertussis booster, according to a new state immunization law. The required booster must have been administered to students after their seventh birthday.

Students who have not been vaccinated will not be allowed to register in Manhattan Beach Unified School District next school year. The vaccine is available for free at the Torrance Health Center, 711 Del Amo Blvd. in Torrance.

For more information, call 310-318-7345 ext. 5932 for middle school students and ext. 5931 for high school students. ER
