Redondo Beach About Town: Pelican surge, homeless man stabbed, “State of the City”

Pelican surge at Redondo Pier

Authorities are asking the public to not feed a growing number of Brown Pelicans that have converged on the Redondo Beach Pier.

A shortage of fish has sent the sea birds landward, but experts caution that offers of human food can hurt their chances of survival.

“Every 5-10 years you see an increase in Pelicans and Western Gulls on the Pier,” said Chentay “Sharky” Reid, Waterfront Education program director, based at King Harbor.

Brown Pelicans eat small fish near the surface of the ocean, such as California bass, white fish, sardines and mackerel. Pelicans can dive 3-5 feet.

The current matter flared about in the past three weeks.

“The less interaction you have with them, the higher the chance for their survival in the wild,” said Reid.

Homeless man stabbed on beach

Police are looking for two assailants who attacked and stabbed a homeless man who was sleeping on the sand in Redondo Beach early Saturday.

The victim survived the 2 a.m. attack near Knob Hill Avenue.

According to police, after a man and a woman came upon the man sleeping, a dispute turned into a fight, during which one of the suspects pulled a knife and stabbed the homeless man. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“We’re actively investigating the case,” said Redondo Beach Police Lt. Fabian Saucedo. “If anybody has information, we’d appreciate it if they contact us.”

Tips may be given to Det. Terrence Stevens at (310) 379-2477, Ext. 2272.
